Julie - I actually have had men come up to talk to me in that voice. However, it was in a gay bar so they obviously thought I was playing on the same team. HAHA!

I hear what you're saying though. That makes a lot of sense. I will tell you though that I have had gay men that do not talk that way tell me they hate the gay voice guys. I think they might be talking about the loud guys you described though. That description is definitely the type of guy I am making fun of in this video and not so much 'everyone' that uses that voice.

And yes....the gay voice does come naturally to me. You may infer what you want from that but trust me I'm straight. I'll tell you what though, how cool would it be to be gay? I mean I would double my wardrobe instantly. I would have someone to watch sports with and drink beer and all that stuff. If it were not for the whole 'penis in my anus' thing I would drop heterosexuality in a heartbeat!

Brian - I think you missed the part in the video where I said "I'm going to be a little homophobic". You see, in my opinion we (straight people) are all a little homophobic. Kinda the same way that almost everyone is a little racist. That being said I have gay friends. I have hung out in a gay bar on more than one occasion and had a blast. At the end of the day I'm just poking fun and trust me, I spread the poking fun around to everyone. So if your ethicity or sexual orientation hasn't been hit by me yet, don't worry it's coming.

Have any gay men truly come up to you and talked to you in the lispy voice? I would be surprised if they did - most of them would avoid doing that because they wouldn't be sure if they would get bashed or not. It's more likely that you've overheard gay men talking together in their lispy voices.

Being gay is sometimes like being invisible with no fellow tribesmembers to hang with. Imagine going to work and being the only tech-geek around. When you met another tech-geek on the street, you'd probably be pretty eager to talk geek stuff. This is the same thing with gay men. Gay women also have ways of connecting that sets them apart (unfortunately for all of us, that has historically included wearing the lesbain mudflap haircut aka. mullet - but I digress).

Back to the subject at hand, connecting is why gay pride is so popular. It's a way to come together with "your people" for a day - not to have to pretend to be someone else. I know you think that talking in a particular way doesn't come naturally, and I agree that it's learned - but it's learned as a way to connect with others like you. So, when you're in their company, it does come out naturally.

Then, for a small portion of gay men, it is because they're attention whores. If they weren't gay, they'd be douchbags, guidos - whatever name you want to pick. These are the gay guys who will talk loudly so that everyone else around them can hear, usually gossiping about someone else or cutting someone else down. Those are guys that you should be ranting about because they're jerks spreading around a lot of negative energy.

In closing, I love you and your page, but I think you're a little off base on this rant and I agree with Charlotte - that voice did come pretty naturally.....................

Gabe - You have a point but my main point is that the 'gay voice' doesn't seem like something that occurs naturally. Therefore it cannot be their true voice. I won't argue that it's the way they feel most comfortable with because it obviously is. In any event, it doesn't matter what I think. Maybe they were being disingenuous before when they spoke with what you call a "normal" accent or tone. I mean, you have to cut them some slack and give them the benefit of the doubt in which case it is not difficult to conclude that the voice with which they feel more comfortable is their lispy intonation. After all, you are parting from the assumption that they began to reproduce this voice after they came out of the closet and part of the effects of such phenomenon is that the person feels relieved an opens up to their true self.

I think that by judging such conduct as disingenuous and false basing your contention on their apparent change of voice is faulty in its assumption. You assume that they were authentic then and have now become false when the effect of coming out of the closet is the exact opposite. I think they're just being themselves now and that's just the way it is. That’s the way the chose to speak because that’s the way with which they feel more comfortable. Just in the same way that certain straight men and straight women speak with what you may describe as a manly or feminine voice, gay men are subject to the same idiosyncrasies. Remember, they’re not doing this for you and you’re not the center of the universe either.

I must also refute the comparison to which some have alluded between gay men with a lisp and women saying that they do not know any women who express themselves in this way. What is your point exactly? If gay men were trying to be women then you would have a point, but gay men are trying to be gay, not women. Just because they have a sexual orientation towards other men doesn't mean they want to be women. What you may be referring to are transgender individuals. Wikipedia that.

Anyhow, I hope you have found my insight productive and good luck with your existentialist inquiries.

Reo - I disagree. Gaming speak is usually only used with other gamers and usually only while gaming. Gay talkers do it amongst straight people and gay people.

Anon - It could be considered similar but like I just told Reo, gay talkers seem to turn on the gay talk and leave it on and not just use it when amongst other gay talkers.

Ok, the voice?? I agree it needs to go, its just a front, its not real, and they arent doing themselves any favors. However I do know a couple of guys who as long as I have known them have had VERY effeminate movements and one of them ALWAYS had a lisp and as soon as I knew what being gay was I had them pegged. Now its one thing if thats the way you always were and somehow dressing in pink and saying HEEEEELOOOOOOOO DARLING!!!! everytime you meet someone fabulous on the street is the way your father, Elton John, raised you. But if its just something you did when you got out of the closet-- do us all a favor, get a walk-in and invite the rest over and stay there!

PS I am not homophobic, my best friend is gay, but he is not the voice gay. And on another note, all my gay guy friends want a man who acts like a big strapping man. Not a woman. Its what makes them gay.

No joke, me and my friends have had numerous drunken discussions regarding exactly this. It drives me fucking nuts. I am not a homophobic at all, but I get so angry when I hear a gay man talking like this. I don't even know girls that speak like this. I am getting angry just thinking about it right now. And I don't want to hear how it is similar to someone speaking a different way because they are brought up that way. That is just dumb, gay people aren't a fucking race or ethnicity that live in specific demographics. They are normal fucking people that happen to be gay. I'm sure when they were babies their parents didnt teach them how to speak using a retarded lisp (unless those parents are also retarded gays, but think about it ladies and gentlemen, that doesn't work :P ). It seems to me like it's a fashion, almost like adopting the clothes or hairstyles of a particular clique. It's simply a mechanism for fitting in to a crowd. Depending on whatever group you fit into could easily be seen as just as annoying as emo, indie, metalheads, etc. Not that any of the above are terrible, it's just proximity and interest.

Like you and Charlotte said, maybe it really is just a way to associate with their group of people. I haven't put a tremendous amount of thought into the issue but I see it as almost a sub-dialect similar to Ebonics. Can not a similar question be asked of why many young urban African-Americans speak in a distinguishable tone? Well I guess an argument can be made that they grew up speaking that way while many gays spontaneously take on the voice. But again just as someone moving into a neighborhood where the residents speak in Ebonics, the new resident is likely to pick up on many of the mannerism and idiomatic expressions associated with Ebonics. This could possibly be the reason new gays take on using words like "fantabolous" and the alteration in their voice.

i agree with you to an extent, but the only gay guys i know grew up in a very feminine environment which would explain the way they speak.
